How to use Google Assistant on Samsung Galaxy Buds | teczgeeks

Samsung might not be emphasizing its Bixby voice assistant as much as it does remembering the Bixby button on the phone?), But it is present on many Samsung accessories. Most versions of Samsung's Galaxy Buds have a gesture to activate your phone's default voice assistant, but if you're using Buds with a Galaxy smartphone, the accessory is usually set to Bixby. What if you want to use Google Assistant instead?

There is no setting in the Galaxy wearable app to switch virtual assistants, but thankfully there are still a few steps to use Google Assistant with Galaxy Buds on Samsung phones. If you want, you can also use Galaxy Buds with Amazon Alexa.

Reset the default assistant

The first step is to know which app is active on your phone when you use the auxiliary gesture on your Galaxy Buds. First, find the Bixby app on your Samsung phone, hold down on the icon, and press the Info button when it appears. You can also search for Bixby in your phone's Settings app, then select the Bixby app.

Once you come to the app information screen for Bixby, tap on default set as default. The screen should say something like "This application is set to open by default for some tasks." Finally, press the 'Default' button. This will remove Bixby as the main accessory to your Galaxy Buds.

Choose your assistant

Now is the time to choose which accessory your Galaxy Bud will use. Your Android phone already has the Google app installed, but if you don't have it for any reason, download the Google app from the Play Store. You can also choose Alexa as your assistant when the Alexa app is installed.

Next, insert the Galaxy Buds into your ears and activate the auxiliary gesture - holding one of the buds for a few seconds until you change the settings. Your phone will display a popup from which you can choose which app you want to use. Tap the assistant you want, then press the 'Always' button. For example, in the screenshot below, I chose "Google" so that I could use Google Assistant instead of Bixby.

Now you can activate Assistant on your Galaxy Buds, and the app you choose will be used instead of Bixby. If you later want to go back to Bixby or switch to a different helper, follow the steps again in the section above (but instead of Bixby, find the application you selected). Samsung should really add a button for this to the Galaxy Wearable app because I'm sure many would like to use Google Assistant instead of Bixby.
